‘The Mentor of Pianists,’ Seoul National University Emeritus Professor Jung Jin-woo, Passes Away

Jung Jin-woo, an honorary professor at Seoul National University and known as the ‘teacher of pianists,’ passed away on the 26th at the age of 97.

The deceased initially entered Pyongyang Medical School in 1945 but moved to South Korea and graduated from Seoul National University’s College of Medicine. He volunteered as a military doctor during the Korean War, and after his discharge, he fully embarked on a musical career. After studying in Vienna, Austria, in 1957, he returned to Korea and served as a professor at Seoul National University’s College of Music from 1959 until his retirement in 1993.

Notable pianists such as Kim Seok, an honorary professor at Kyung Hee University, Shin Soo-jung, an honorary professor at Seoul National University, and Kim Yong-bae, an honorary professor at Chugye University for the Arts, studied under him, giving rise to the phrase ‘Jung Jin-woo Academy.’ He also founded the Korea Chopin Society and the Korea Beethoven Association, and established the monthly magazine ‘Piano Music.’ He was awarded the Korean Cultural Medal and the Korean Academy of Arts Award. The funeral will be held at Seoul Asan Medical Center, with the procession taking place on the 28th.
