The “Craftsman of the Year” award goes to artisan Jang Yeon-soon, Design House, and curator Im Mi-seon.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation announced on the 9th that they have selected craftsman Jang Yeon-soon (in the creation category) as one of the winners of the ‘2024 Craft of the Year Award’.

In the mediation category, ‘Design House’ was selected, and in the newly established theory category, curator Lim Mi-sun was chosen as the winner.

Craftsman Jang Yeon-soon is recognized for reinterpreting traditional Korean indigo dyeing and gold leaf techniques into modern textile forms. Design House was acknowledged for its contributions to the widespread popularization of craft culture through magazines such as the first craft-specialized magazine “Craft” (published from March 1988 to February 1995) and the monthly “Design.”

Lim Mi-sun, the winner in the theory category, is a curator and researcher specializing in craft exhibitions, having served as the artistic director for the ‘2024 12th Gyeonggi Ceramic Biennale’ and the ‘2021 Cheongju Craft Biennale.’

The winners receive a cash prize (15 million won for the creation category, 5 million won each for the mediation and theory categories), a certificate of commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and a trophy.

The award ceremony and the exhibition for the creation category will take place from December 12th to 15th at the ‘2024 19th Craft Trend Fair’ held at COEX in Seoul.
