(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ji-seon = Professor Seo Kyeong-deok of Sungshin Women’s University announced on the 15th that he produced a video in collaboration with actress Song Hye-kyo to commemorate “Kim Maria,” a new female independence activist, ahead of the National Independence Fighter’s Day on the 17th.
Professor Seo stated on his social network service (SNS) that “the video, narrated in both Korean and English, is being shared with netizens domestically and internationally.”
This video, which runs for 4 minutes and 30 seconds, was planned by Professor Seo and sponsored by Song Hye-kyo.
Kim Maria, during her time as a student in Tokyo, hid the February 8th Declaration of Independence inside the kimono she wore once in her lifetime, entered Korea through the Busan port, and transported it through Gwangju, Daegu, and Seoul to Hwanghae Province, igniting the flames of the March 1st Movement.
The video refers to Kim Maria, who established the women’s secret society “Korean Patriotic Women’s Association” and delivered military funds to the provisional government, as a “Joseon heroine power.”
It also recalls the footsteps of this leading new woman of her time who dedicated her life to the independence movement, acting as the first female delegate in the Provisional Assembly of Korea and organizing the women’s independence organization “Geunhwa Association” while studying in the United States.
Professor Seo mentioned, “I am sharing the third video following those of Jeong Jeong-hwa and Yoon Hee-soon to spotlight the lives of female independence activists who are not well-known to the public and to introduce them widely to the world.” He added, “I will continue to present this series consistently.”
Since 2012, Professor Seo and Song Hye-kyo have been conducting a project to donate Korean guides, Korean signboards, and relief works to 37 sites related to the independence movement overseas in line with historical anniversaries.
