National Maritime Museum Releases Three Books Evoking the Scent of the Sea

The National Maritime Museum (Director Kim Jong-hae) has published three new books to promote the value of maritime culture. These include the ‘Ocean Heritage 6’, ‘Ocean Crafts, Blooming the Sea’, and ‘The Sea Unveiled by the Museum’.

‘Ocean Heritage 6’ is an academic journal covering maritime history, art, folklore, and archaeology. Selected as an academic candidate journal by the National Research Foundation of Korea in 2023, it is published annually to share research achievements in various fields related to the ocean. This issue contains nine manuscripts, including five academic papers and additional reviews and research notes.

‘Ocean Crafts, Blooming the Sea’ is the third book in the ‘Ocean Series’, aimed at introducing maritime crafts that use materials sourced from the sea, such as mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, and fish skin, making it easy and engaging for readers. It contains 83 maritime craft materials and 57 reference materials from both national and international institutions, highlighting the artistic sense and broad techniques of our ancestors.

‘The Sea Unveiled by the Museum’ compiles articles from the museum’s series published in regional newspapers from May 2023 to December 2024. Written by museum staff, the book offers insights into the maritime culture and historical significance held within the museum’s collections. The book includes a wealth of photographic material not featured in the newspaper series.

These three books will be distributed to public libraries and research institutions, and are available for free viewing and download on the National Maritime Museum’s website. The museum aims to continue systematic research on maritime history and culture, and to share the results with the public to promote the value of maritime culture.
