National Archives and Heritage Administration Join Hands for UNESCO World Heritage Committee Preparation in Busan

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s National Archives and the National Heritage Administration signed a memorandum of understanding at the Government Complex Daejeon on the 27th to ensure the success of the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

The World Heritage Committee is the largest international event related to world heritage, and will be held this July in Busan. This is the first time it will be hosted domestically. The two agencies plan to jointly organize exhibitions, international conferences, and tourism programs utilizing records related to world and documentary heritages.

The National Archives will host special exhibitions on UNESCO World Documentary Heritage topics such as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the May 18th Democratic Uprising, the Saemaul Movement, the Donghak Peasant Revolution, the April 19th Revolution, the Search for Separated Families, and forest rehabilitation. They will also create a program for viewing the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, preserved at the National Archives’ Busan branch, to emphasize the importance of world documentary heritage and to share the history of records with the world.

The National Heritage Administration is set to oversee exhibitions using documents related to UNESCO membership and the history of world heritage inscriptions.

The two agencies stated, “We will continue to collaborate with various public and private institutions to ensure the World Heritage Committee, being hosted in our country for the first time, becomes a successful event.”
