Making fermented soybeans and eating gekukji… The ‘National Heritage Week’ event enriched with Korean cuisine

National Heritage Administration to Host Visits, Performances, and Experiences at Over 400 Locations Nationwide from the 30th

A variety of events will be held across the country allowing people to enjoy national heritage through visits, performances, exhibitions, and more.

The National Heritage Administration announced on the 28th that it will hold the “National Heritage Week” events at over 400 national heritage sites across the country from May 30 to June 22, in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Heritage Utilization Organization.

The National Heritage Festival is an event that encompasses the national heritage utilization projects held in each region.

This year, under the theme “National Heritage in Everyday Life,” special programs will be introduced that combine local traditional Korean food, such as traditional jang (fermented sauces) and gaegukji (a type of kimchi), with national heritage.

On June 14 and 20, visitors to Bohyeonsa Temple in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, can participate in making traditional jang passed down in the Gangneung region and enjoy the tea culture of the temples.

At Haengju Fortress in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, a program will be conducted from Wednesday to Sunday each week during the event period, where participants can make lotus leaf rice using Gawaji rice, which is known to have been first cultivated on the Korean Peninsula.

In Taean, South Chungcheong Province, there will be a hands-on experience event for making the local dish gaegukji at the Taean Maritime Relics Exhibition Hall, among others.

Various events utilizing national heritage will also be held in line with the event period.

A representative from the National Heritage Administration said, “We hope this will be an opportunity to encounter the history, culture, and stories of diverse national heritage and for their value to permeate everyday life.”
