Leaders of the six major religious orders say, “The Constitutional Court is the final bastion… It will deliver a fair ruling.”

The Korean Council of Religious Leaders, comprised of representatives from seven major religious groups, stated on March 5th that as the decision on President Yoon Seok-yeol’s impeachment trial approaches, “We must respect and accept the Constitutional Court’s decision to resolve the national crisis smoothly.” The council emphasized that “Democracy is built on the power of procedure, and rejecting that procedure impedes our progress.” They expressed trust that the Constitutional Court, as Korea’s final bastion, would make a fair judgment, urging that all politicians and the public should accept the decision.

Furthermore, the council noted that ongoing political conflict and strife are causing deep wounds among the people, highlighting the importance of remembering that Korea belongs to all its people and not just one individual. They called for unity beyond divisions, urging the government and politicians to stop extremist claims and respect the Constitutional Court’s decision for the nation’s stability.

The statement was issued in the names of various religious leaders, including Jinu, the Executive Director of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and six co-representatives from other religious organizations.

In their full statement, titled “Republic of Korea, let’s move forward united,” they reflected on the severe times following the president’s declaration of martial law, his impeachment, arrest, and trial. Despite international reputational and economic losses, the most painful issue has been the deepening divide among the people. They believe that only by respecting the constitutional process can trust be restored and order reestablished. The statement also expressed hope for peace and stability, unity among the populace, and the safeguarding of Korean democracy. The religious leaders concluded with a call for continued cooperation, believing that hope lies ahead on the path they are walking together.
