An exhibition titled “Coal Era with Samcheok,” which reflects on the lives of miners who served as industrial warriors driving the history of the coal industry and economic development, opened on the 10th at the Samcheok City Museum.

Hosted by the Samcheok City Museum and the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the exhibition will conclude on August 31.

The exhibition is divided into three parts: ‘Achieving Economic Revival through Increased Coal Production,’ ‘The Whistle Blows, Let’s Go to Work,’ and ‘Dad, Come Home Safe Today.’ It features a 42cm coal ore extracted from the Samcheok Dogye Coal Mine, as well as tools actually used in the Samcheok, Taebaek, and Mungyeong mines. Visitors can also watch videos sharing stories of people from coal mining towns.

The prologue presents a video introduction to the history of the Dogye Coal Mine and the process from coal formation to the Industrial Revolution.

A photo zone recreating miners’ lunchboxes hung from the mine ceiling is set up, and there are experience programs such as making coal briquette-shaped soap.

Samcheok Mayor Park Sang-soo said, “I hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the pride of national industrial development cherished by Dogye residents and to spread social consensus on the memory and preservation of coal industry heritage.”
