[News Today]
As cold air pushes in from the northwest, the bitter cold has returned. A cold wave warning is in effect for the Gangwon mountains, while a cold wave advisory is in effect for northern Gyeonggi and Gangwon. Currently, the temperature in Seoul is minus 5.7 degrees Celsius with a strong wind, resulting in a wind chill of minus 8 degrees. In other areas, the temperatures have dropped significantly compared to yesterday, with Paju at minus 11.7 degrees, Cheorwon at minus 13.1 degrees, and Chungju at minus 9.1 degrees. Today’s wind chill will remain in the negative, making it cold all day. Make sure to dress warmly before heading out. Despite the severe cold, heavy snow is expected in the Chungcheongnam-do and Honam regions. As the cold air passes over the Yellow Sea, strong snow clouds will form. Snow is already falling along the west coast of Jeonbuk and Chungcheongnam-do, and by the afternoon, snow clouds will move inland. Expected snowfall is up to 20cm in Jeonbuk, with 3 to 10cm in the west coast of Chungcheongnam-do and Gwangju/Jeonnam. Particularly in these regions, very heavy snow of 1 to 3cm per hour is expected. Take care to prevent any damage to structures due to the wet and heavy snow. Other regions, including Seoul, will mostly have cloudy skies. With dry conditions and strong winds on the eastern coast, caution is needed to prevent fires. Most of the snow will subside by tomorrow morning. The severe cold is expected to continue through the weekend, but temperatures will rise slightly on the holiday. There is no extreme cold expected on the last day of the year.
