A foreigner breathes out visible breath on the morning of the 16th at Gwanghwamun Intersection in Seoul, as cold weather continues with morning temperatures dropping to -5 degrees in Seoul.

[Herald Economy’s Reporter Seo Ji-yeon] The cold weather will continue at levels typical for this time of year until Friday, the 17th. Caution is advised for black ice during the commute.

Morning temperatures on the 17th are expected to range from -13 to 0 degrees, and daytime temperatures from 3 to 9 degrees. In the inland and mountain areas of Gangwon, morning temperatures will drop below -10 degrees, with a slight wind making it considerably cold.

Expected minimum and maximum temperatures in major cities are: Seoul, -5 and 5 degrees; Incheon, -4 and 3 degrees; Daejeon, -5 and 6 degrees; Gwangju, -3 and 7 degrees; Daegu, -4 and 8 degrees; Ulsan, -2 and 9 degrees; and Busan, 0 and 9 degrees.

As temperatures drop overnight, snow that melted during the 16th could refreeze on the roads. In particular, black ice is likely to form in areas of central regions and Jeonbuk, where snow has continued recently, so caution is needed.

Temperatures are expected to rise to around or slightly higher than average from the weekend.

The regions currently under a dry weather advisory—such as the east coast and southern mountain areas of Gangwon, northeastern mountain areas of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and parts of Gyeongsangnam-do—will continue to experience very dry air for a while.

A high wave advisory has been issued for the distant seas of the central east coast and the northern distant seas of the southern east coast. Until the 17th, strong winds blowing at 30 to 60 km/h (9 to 16 m/s) are expected, with waves reaching heights of 1.5 to 4.0 meters.
