[Sports Chosun Online Reporter Jeong An-ji] Shuka, an economic YouTuber with 3.45 million subscribers and a participant in various entertainment programs, faced criticism after mentioning in a video that he hopes President Yoon Suk-yeol completes his term smoothly, which was perceived as supporting martial law. Consequently, he made the video private.
In a live broadcast on his YouTube channel on the morning of the 6th, Shuka referred to President Yoon Suk-yeol’s declaration of martial law. He mentioned the current political situation, saying, “I am neither left nor right, and I have no intention to support anyone. I hope the current president does well and finishes his term uneventfully. I wish the same for the next president. I hope the left and right can work together to accomplish something.”
Furthermore, Shuka commented on former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun’s order to lift martial law, stating, “It was an insurmountable situation. Well done, return safely,” and expressed uncertainty about what was insurmountable. Former Minister Kim is known to have suggested martial law to President Yoon, and at the time of lifting martial law, he reportedly told national commanders that the saying ‘insurmountable’ applied to the situation, indicating they lacked the numbers to fight.
Following the controversy over his comments, Shuka has made the live broadcast video private.
Meanwhile, President Yoon declared martial law in an emergency statement at 10:25 PM on the 3rd. The National Assembly convened a general meeting at 1:00 AM on the 4th, passing a resolution to lift martial law, and six hours after declaring it, President Yoon lifted martial law.
On the afternoon of the 4th, the Democratic Party along with six other opposition parties submitted a motion to impeach President Yoon to the National Assembly, which is expected to be reported at a general meeting. The vote is planned for the 6th or 7th. The People Power Party decided on the 5th to officially oppose the impeachment motion against President Yoon.
