In Gwangju, a concert by singer Lee Seung-hwan, which was canceled in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, will be held in May.
The concert is expected to receive significant attention as it coincides with the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement.
According to the city of Gwangju on the 5th, the Lee Seung-hwan concert is scheduled to be held at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Gwangju on May 3, prior to the May 18 anniversary.
Lee Seung-hwan applied for the venue booking at the center, and the concert date was set according to the booking schedule.
The concert venue is the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center’s multipurpose hall, with a seating capacity of 3,000.
The city has been working on venue bookings including the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center and the Arts Center.
Following the May 18 anniversary, a commemorative performance for Gwangju Citizens’ Day (May 23) is also being planned.
Lee Seung-hwan planned to perform at the Gumi Cultural and Arts Center on December 25 last year, but Gumi city canceled the venue booking citing citizen safety and political agitation, leading to controversy.
Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jung, upon hearing this news, proposed to host the concert in Gwangju, to which Lee Seung-hwan responded, “I look forward to performing in Gwangju, the sanctuary of democracy.”
Gwangju City has been supporting the venue booking among other things to help Lee Seung-hwan’s Guangzhou concert proceed.
A Gwangju city official stated, “Lee Seung-hwan pursued the concert by applying for the venue booking, and Gwangju City only provided the venue, but it seems more meaningful given it’s a concert held in Gwangju, the city of art and democracy.”
