“Money-printing machine”… Mariah Carey generates billions in revenue from a carol from 30 years ago

According to a report by CNBC on the 25th (local time), citing estimates from Billboard, Mariah Carey is estimated to have earned between $2.7 million and $3.3 million (approximately 3.9 billion to 4.8 billion Korean won) in 2022 from just one song. CNBC noted that the exact income is hard to determine because Mariah Carey and her record company have never disclosed the copyright contract details for this song.

George Howard, a Berklee College of Music professor and former president of the independent record label Rykodisc, described the song as a “money-making machine.” He estimated that the song generates annual sales of $2 million to $4 million (about 2.9 billion to 5.8 billion Korean won). The music industry law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips estimated that the song’s annual sales are about $3.4 million and that it has generated a total revenue of about $103 million (approximately 150.3 billion Korean won) over the past 30 years.
