Hit-and-run under the influence and assault charges against a YouTuber with 1.65 million followers? Social media account with ‘410k followers’ deactivated after backlash and flood of criticism.

Sports Chosun reporter Baek Ji-eun reports that a mukbang YouTuber, Sanghaegi, has deleted his social media amid allegations of fleeing from a DUI incident.

On the 23rd, Songpa Police Station announced that a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, was arrested and is under investigation for refusing a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act.

Mr. A was caught driving under the influence of alcohol on the morning of the 21st. He attempted to flee while refusing a police request for a breathalyzer test but was ultimately arrested as a flagrant offender. It is reported that Mr. A is a well-known YouTuber with over 1.65 million subscribers.

Speculation arose that Sanghaegi, who has 1.65 million subscribers on his personal channel, might be Mr. A. Following this, netizens flooded Sanghaegi’s social media with comments asking if the drunk driving allegations were true and demanding explanations, along with criticisms like “I’m disappointed” and “Were you pretending to be good?” Sanghaegi subsequently deleted his account, which was a popular account with about 410,000 followers.

Sanghaegi began his broadcasting career on AfreecaTV as “BJ Hyukgi” in 2018 and transitioned to YouTube in 2019, showcasing various mukbang content. He also appeared on KBS2’s “The Boss Has Donkey Ears.” In 2020, he issued a public apology for a YouTube stealth advertising incident.
