“Elderly Disrespect?”… Viewers Criticize MBC ‘TodayN’ PD for Rude Behavior Controversy

MBC’s program ‘TodayN’ has come under criticism for the attitude of its production team. The controversy arose during the episode aired on January 1, featuring an elderly man living in a remote area of Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. The elderly man, who returned to his hometown after running a real estate business in Gyeongju, showcased three houses he had built, including a mud house and a music room, as well as oyster mushrooms he cultivated himself.

The problem centered around the PD’s attitude during the segment. When the elderly man mentioned people visiting mud houses for health benefits, the PD responded, “I don’t really go. I’m not at the age to appreciate it yet.” Similarly, when the man said, “As you get older, you should move your hands and feet well,” after playing drums, the PD remarked, “You can just work in the fields,” in a somewhat blunt tone.

The PD also responded indifferently when the man offered to bring mushrooms to Seoul, saying, “You can’t get these in Seoul,” to which the PD replied, “You can find them in Seoul markets.” Before being offered a homemade charcoal-grilled chicken, the PD jokingly said, “I only like fried chicken.” Despite showing satisfaction when lying in the mud house or eating the grilled chicken, viewers criticized the PD’s demeanor.

Viewers expressed their dissatisfaction on the show’s message board, calling the PD’s behavior rude and disrespectful. Some netizens pointed out the lack of courtesy shown towards the elderly man, questioning whether the PD was dismissive because the man chose to spend his retirement in the countryside.

‘TodayN’ is a sister program to ‘Live Morning Today,’ designed to dynamically present various information, wisdom of daily life, lifestyle, popular culture, and social issues.
