Government ministries related to labor safety gathered to discuss measures to reduce serious industrial accidents.
Today (the 5th), Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Young-hoon held a meeting with safety-related ministers at the Seoul Government Complex.
This meeting was convened following a directive from the president to develop comprehensive measures to eradicate serious industrial accidents with the cooperation of all ministries.
Attendees included ministers and vice ministers from the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the Ministry of Government Legislation, and the Financial Services Commission.
The meeting discussed ways to expand financial and technical support to enable small businesses, which lack safety management capacity, to independently prevent serious industrial accidents.
Effective sanction measures against companies with repeated fatal accidents were also addressed.
Minister Kim stated, “The right of workers to work safely is a constitutional value, and it is the most basic and crucial duty of the government to ensure that workers do not get injured or killed at their workplaces.”
He emphasized, “Since accident prevention benefits both labor and the nation, we plan to swiftly announce a ‘Comprehensive Labor Safety Plan’ to create a safe workplace, including what was discussed in this meeting.”
Minister Kim added that they would unite as one team to reduce serious industrial accidents during the follow-up implementation process and explore solutions through regular discussions among cabinet members on major labor issues, including industrial safety.
