Chey Tae-won, the chairman of SK Group, highlighted the strong relationship with TSMC, the leading Taiwanese foundry company, on November 4th during the ‘SK Summit 2024’ held at COEX, Seoul. In his keynote speech titled ‘An AI Ecosystem Built on Cooperation,’ he expressed, “Every time I have conversations with TSMC, I feel warmth. This company consistently respects its partners and makes considerable efforts to address their concerns.”

He further explained, “While it may be due to the nature of foundry services that require understanding clients’ needs and supplying timely solutions, it is not only that. They strive for customer value.”

Chairman Chey also shared an anecdote about Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC. He stated, “I have known Morris Chang for over 20 years. At that time, I wasn’t in the semiconductor field, so I had no reason to seek advice. After deciding to acquire SK Hynix, I consulted him for his thoughts.”

According to Chey, Morris Chang expressed, “The future of the semiconductor field is bright. We welcome you as an industry peer, and we can become partners moving forward.”

Chey emphasized the importance of such human connections, explaining, “This is why we maintain a close relationship with TSMC even today. Through trilateral cooperation between SK Hynix, NVIDIA, and TSMC, we are developing the highest level of semiconductors driven by AI innovation.”

Previously, SK Hynix signed an MOU with TSMC in April for technical collaboration to enhance next-generation HBM production and advanced packaging technology capabilities. Through this collaboration, both companies will jointly develop the 6th generation HBM, known as HBM4, with mass production planned for 2026.
