Samsung Display’s privacy protection technology, first applied to the Galaxy S26, passes UL certification

The smartphone OLED featuring Samsung Display’s Flex Magic Pixel™ (FMP) has passed the ‘Privacy Display’ certification from UL Solutions.

Unveiled on the 25th (local time) in San Francisco, the next-generation privacy technology, Flex Magic Pixel, has been applied for the first time to Samsung Electronics’ ‘Galaxy S26 Ultra’.

Samsung Display announced today (26th) that global safety science company UL Solutions evaluated their smartphone OLED with ‘FMP’ technology and confirmed that the display has view-blocking capabilities across all directions, including vertical and horizontal.

Flex Magic Pixel technology is a viewing angle control technology designed to maintain a clear screen when viewed head-on, while making the screen information blurry or difficult to identify at certain angles.

Its key feature is that it can naturally protect privacy without the need for separate privacy films or settings.

UL Solutions stated, “To evaluate the performance, we tilted the panel at 45 and 60 degrees and rotated it 360 degrees to measure the decrease in screen brightness compared to the front.” They reported that the side luminance of Samsung OLED with FMP technology recorded 3.5% at a 45-degree angle and below 0.9% at a 60-degree angle compared to the front.

This means that if the front screen brightness is assumed to be 100, the brightness at a 45-degree angle is reduced to about 3.5, which is about 1/30th of the front, and drops to below 0.9 at 60 degrees, making it significantly darker than 1/100th of the front.

In contrast, the side screen brightness of a regular smartphone without FMP is about 40% compared to the front, making the screen identifiable from the side.

Samsung Display had previously introduced Flex Magic Pixel technology for the first time globally at the world’s largest information and communication exhibition, the ‘Mobile World Congress (MWC)’ held in 2024.

As concerns about personal data leaks and privacy exposure through smartphones in public places grow with the rise of the AI era and increased data usage, global set companies’ interest in this technology is also increasing, according to Samsung Display.
