Nonsan City in South Chungcheong Province announced on the 26th that the Nonsan Strawberry Industry Special Zone has been selected as one of the excellent regional special zones for 2024 by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
The Nonsan Clean Strawberry Industry Special Zone was the only one in the agricultural sector to be chosen among 181 special zones nationwide.
According to a city official, policies that have contributed to the development of the strawberry industry in Nonsan have received high evaluations from experts and a citizen evaluation panel.
Nonsan, known as the largest strawberry production area in the country for over 60 years, was the first in Korea to adopt eco-friendly and natural enemy farming methods in 1988. It leads in developing and distributing scientific farming technologies such as cultivating and breeding new varieties like Seolhyang and Kingsberry, and converting to hydroponic cultivation facilities.
Nonsan City, which holds an annual strawberry festival and is expanding the export channels of local agricultural products overseas, aims to host the World Strawberry Industry Expo in 2027.
