LG Innotek to Expand into KRW 2 Trillion Vehicle Sensing Business with High-Performance Camera Modules

LG Innotek has announced the development of a high-performance in-cabin camera module equipped with a five-million-pixel RGB-IR (Red, Green, Blue, Infrared) sensor. This innovative module is designed for installation within vehicles and can be mounted in various positions like the rearview mirror or above the passenger seat. It enables real-time monitoring of the driver and passengers, detecting states like drowsiness or checking seatbelt usage. Unlike previous in-cabin cameras that were limited to specific functions such as DMS (Driver Monitoring System) and OMS (Occupant Monitoring System), this new camera can perform multiple functions with just one unit. The new module incorporates advanced wide-angle technology, allowing it to monitor front and back-seat passengers with high precision, even in low-light conditions, thanks to its infrared detection capability.

Moreover, LG Innotek has reduced the size of the module by 15%, employing a “wedge bonding” technique that uses ultrasonic waves to attach the chip to the substrate. This downsizing facilitates easier installation in a wider range of positions within the vehicle. The development of this high-performance camera module is part of LG Innotek’s strategy to strengthen its vehicle sensing solutions, aiming to grow its automotive sensing business to 2 trillion won by 2030. The company is actively promoting this product to automakers in North America, Europe, and other regions.

In the context of increased interest in autonomous driving and legislation in places like Europe mandating DMS in vehicles by 2025, the global market for automotive camera modules is expected to grow significantly. According to S&P Global, the market size is projected to increase from approximately $6.923 billion in 2023 to around $10.769 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 7%. LG Innotek will showcase this and other innovative products at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.
