Labor unions urge for the abolition of the ‘clause on applying different minimum wages’.

Labor unions and civic organizations have urged for a revision of the law to abolish the discriminatory application clause of the minimum wage.

Major labor groups, including the Joint Labor Union, held a press conference in front of the National Assembly headquarters, arguing that the original purpose of the minimum wage system, which is to ensure stability in the lives of low-wage workers, should be established and discriminatory practices of the minimum wage should be abolished.

They stated that through the prioritized bill of labor in the 22nd National Assembly, they will prevent all discriminatory clauses such as deliberation clauses for differentiated application by industry and reduction in wages for probationary workers.

Article 4, Paragraph 1 of the Minimum Wage Act allows for the minimum wage to be set “by distinguishing it by type of business.”

Participants demanded the abolition of such discriminatory clauses, claiming that these clauses “block social mobility among workers, widen economic disparities, and lead Korean society to discrimination and tragedy.”

In particular, they emphasized that they would definitely reject the business sector’s demand for ‘differentiation by industry’ in the minimum wage deliberations for next year that began last month.
