Focus on Discussions about US-Korea Investment and Tariffs
On the 18th (local time), according to the White House pool reporters and local media, Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, held a meeting with heads of major Korean conglomerates at the Mar-a-Lago golf course in Florida. The photo shows President Trump playing golf at Turnberry, Scotland, on March 2, 2023.
Lee Jae-yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, and other leading Korean business figures had a ‘golf meeting’ with former President Trump. Considering that Trump spent 8 hours at the golf course, it is anticipated that discussions on US-Korea investment or tariffs likely took place over an extended period.
According to reports, Trump arrived at the Mar-a-Lago golf course at around 9:15 a.m. on the 18th (local time) and finished his round at 4:52 p.m., returning to the resort at 4:59 p.m.
The meeting was attended by Lee Jae-yong of Samsung, Chung Eui-sun of Hyundai Motor Group, Chey Tae-won of SK Group, Koo Kwang-mo of LG Group, and Kim Dong-kwan of Hanwha Group, who all played golf with Trump.
Details about who partnered with Trump during the game or the nature of the discussions with the business leaders were not disclosed. There’s also a possibility that Trump did not golf alongside all the conglomerate heads.
However, there is a high likelihood that the business leaders conversed with Trump before or after the game, or during lunch or breaks, even if they didn’t play a round together.
As the event was organized at the invitation of Masayoshi Son from SoftBank, there are expectations that they discussed cooperation on the U.S.’s massive artificial intelligence infrastructure project, ‘Stargate,’ as well as US-Korea tariff negotiations.
