In August, imported electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 30% of the domestic market, the lowest in 13 months.

According to data from the Kaizyu Data Research Institute, in August, a total of 13,315 electric cars were sold in the domestic market, with 4,118 of them being imported. This translates to an import electric car market share of 30.9%. The market share of imported electric cars in August was at its lowest monthly level since July last year, reflecting a 10.2% decrease compared to the previous month.

Among the brands, Mercedes-Benz showed the largest decrease in sales, with a 50.4% drop in August, selling 133 electric cars. BMW followed with a 43% decrease, selling 406 electric cars, and Tesla sold 2,208 electric cars, marking a 17.6% decrease.

Among the top 6 brands in electric car sales for August, only Kia, a domestic brand, showed an increase in sales, with a 58.7% growth reaching 6,398 units. Hyundai, on the other hand, experienced a 21% decrease in sales, selling 2,256 electric cars.

The automobile industry attributes the recent negative impact on the electric car market to the recent underground parking lot fires in Incheon apartments.
