Hyundai Motor to Build Korea’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Plant at Ulsan Factory

Hyundai Motor Company has decided to build a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell plant at its Ulsan plant. This marks the first time Hyundai is constructing a hydrogen fuel cell plant in South Korea.

According to Hyundai’s labor union on the 11th, the company finalized the construction of the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell plant this month. The site for the new plant is an unused area within the transmission plant of Hyundai’s Ulsan facility, spanning approximately 42,975 square meters. The construction is set to begin this year with the goal of starting mass production by 2028.

Once completed, the hydrogen fuel cell plant at the Ulsan facility will be Hyundai’s second and the first of its kind in South Korea. Hyundai previously constructed a fuel cell system plant in Guangzhou, China, in June 2023.

With this plant, Hyundai aims to establish a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell production system that integrates chemical processes and assembly processes. The hydrogen fuel cells produced at this new plant are expected to be used in the Nexo or Elec City hydrogen buses.

In February 2024, after acquiring the entire domestic hydrogen fuel cell business from Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai is anticipated to further strengthen its hydrogen business. Additionally, the company is looking to expand its business based on its hydrogen value chain brand “HTWO.”
