Hyundai and Kia continue their strong performance in the U.S. hybrid market in January, with eco-friendly vehicles accounting for 20.1% of their sales.

(Seoul=News1) Reporter Park Ki-beom = Hyundai Motor Group (005380) recorded the highest January sales in the US, thanks to solid sales of eco-friendly cars.

According to Hyundai Motor Group, last January in the USA, Hyundai Motor (005380) sold 59,355 units, and Kia (000270) sold 57,007 units. This represents the highest January sales for both companies in the US market. Compared to the same period last year, Hyundai saw a 14.6% increase and Kia an 11.6% increase, totaling combined sales of 116,362 units, a 13.1% rise.

Genesis, a part of Hyundai, also achieved its highest-ever monthly sales with 4,852 units sold last month.

The sales performance last month was driven by eco-friendly cars. Sales of hybrid cars (HEV) and electric cars (EV) increased by 30.3% year-over-year to 23,338 units. Eco-friendly cars accounted for 20.1% of total sales, an increase of 2.7 percentage points from the previous year.

Hybrid sales increased by 47.3% to 16,591 units, while electric car sales rose by 1.8% to 6,747 units. Among hybrids, the Tucson saw a 68% increase to 5,042 units, followed by Santa Fe (2,667 units), Sportage (2,807 units), Carnival (1,772 units), and Sorento (1,627 units). Notably, the new Carnival Hybrid successfully entered the market with over 1,000 units sold.

For electric cars, the Ioniq 5 saw a 53.6% increase with 2,250 units sold, while the Ioniq 6 sold 871 units, and the EV6 sold 1,542 units.
