Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min mentioned the workplace harassment allegations involving the late MBC weathercaster Oh Yo-anna while appearing on an MBC broadcast.
On the February 3rd episode of MBC radio’s ‘Kim Jong-bae’s Focus’, Yoo asked the anchor, “If there are workplace harassment issues, shouldn’t a broadcaster like MBC conduct a thorough investigation and apologize if necessary? How can MBC not address it when all other media outlets are reporting it?”
He added, “I hope MBC will understand the feelings of the bereaved family and the victim, conduct a proper investigation, and address the issue appropriately. I’m speaking out because no one else is.”
The host agreed, saying, “That’s a valid point in principle,” and mentioned that MBC has formed an investigation committee and will release a statement once the findings are available.
On January 31st, Yoo also criticized MBC’s handling of the issue on his social media, stating, “MBC’s stance and attitude towards the ‘workplace harassment allegations’ involving the late Oh Yo-anna are deeply disappointing and deserve criticism. MBC should reflect on itself and rectify issues before reporting on labor market problems.”
Oh Yo-anna, who joined MBC as a weathercaster in 2021, passed away suddenly last September. Recent media reports have revealed parts of her will, raising suspicions of workplace harassment. On January 31st, a group chat among colleagues potentially suggesting verbal attacks on the deceased was also disclosed.
The bereaved family claims that Oh informed four MBC personnel about the harassment, but no action was taken. In response, MBC stated that the deceased never reported any harassment to the concerned department or managers. Due to ongoing controversies, MBC has decided to form an investigative committee to determine the cause of death and uncover the truth.
