The nation’s first ‘climate insurance’ to be implemented in Gyeonggi Province in March.

Gyeonggi Province announced today that it will be implementing a “Climate Insurance” policy for the first time in the nation starting this March.

The climate insurance is a policy aimed at minimizing health damage caused by climate events such as heatwaves and cold waves and addressing climate disparities by supporting climate-vulnerable populations.

It operates on an automatic enrollment basis for all residents without a separate sign-up process and provides fixed support, including diagnosis fees for heat-related and cold-related illnesses (100,000 KRW annually), infectious disease diagnosis fees (100,000 KRW per incident), and accident consolation money of 300,000 KRW for injuries lasting more than four weeks due to weather advisories.

An additional 160,000 climate-vulnerable individuals, who are part of the city and county health centers’ home health care management program, will receive further support. This includes hospitalization fees for heat and cold-related illnesses (up to 100,000 KRW for five days), transportation costs to medical facilities during weather advisories (20,000 KRW), ambulance transfer costs in climate disasters (up to 500,000 KRW per incident), and mental health support for climate-related disasters (100,000 KRW per session).

The climate insurance will be funded with Gyeonggi Province’s own budget of 3.4 billion KRW, and procedures related to the insurance contract, such as recruiting insurers through an open bid, will proceed this month.
