The National AI Computing Center to Go to Jeonnam? … Samsung SDS Notified of Jeonnam as Candidate Site

Jeollanam-do’s possibility of hosting a national artificial intelligence (AI) computing center has increased.

It has been confirmed that Jeollanam-do was notified as a candidate site on the 21st, the application deadline for the national AI computing center project.

According to Jeollanam-do, a consortium led by Samsung SDS has selected Jeollanam-do as a candidate site for the national AI computing center and is expected to submit the application on the same day.

The Ministry of Science and ICT requires applicants for the national AI computing center project to complete their applications by 5 PM that day.

The consortium led by Samsung SDS is the sole participant in the bidding for the national AI computing center establishment project.

Practically, the local government chosen by the Samsung SDS consortium is likely to become the hosting area.

It is reported that neither the Ministry nor Samsung SDS intends to disclose the specific location for the national AI computing center.

Jeollanam-do has reportedly proposed a business-friendly strategy, such as providing electricity at low rates from its Shinan offshore wind power project.

A Jeollanam-do official stated, “It is true that we have been notified by Samsung SDS to participate in this project together.”

The national AI computing center will serve as national infrastructure for AI learning and service development.

A total of 2.5 trillion KRW will be invested, combining public-private contributions and policy loans.

Meanwhile, Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jung issued an appeal this morning, stating, “The fastest way for South Korea to become a top AI nation is to establish a national AI computing center in Gwangju.”

He emphasized, “The establishment of the national AI computing center is about building public infrastructure under national responsibility, unlike private data center inducement, and laying a foundation for the country’s future industry. It should not be decided based solely on corporate interests.”
