The Korean Association of Athletic Federations Unites to Bid for the ‘Jeonju Olympics’

Invitation Conference with Jeonbuk Governor Kim Kwan-young
Regional City Solidarity as a New Model for Balanced Development
Forming Consensus for 2036 Olympics

On the 26th, the Korea Local Newspaper Association held a breakfast meeting at Jeonju Grand Hilton with Jeonbuk Governor Kim Kwan-young, sharing the current status of Jeonju’s bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics.

The Korea Local Newspaper Association, consisting of 29 regional daily newspapers nationwide (Chairman Kim Joong-seok, Gangwon Domin Ilbo), invited Governor Kim to the meeting to actively work on forming a public consensus to support Jeonju’s bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics.

At the breakfast meeting held at Jeonju Grand Hilton, Governor Kim emphasized the rationale for hosting the Olympics, advocating for “regional city solidarity” and the “100th anniversary of Sohn Kee-chung’s achievement,” seeking support from the association members to foster a public consensus.

Governor Kim explained that moving away from a Seoul-centric approach, the idea is for regional cities to unite and propose a new Olympic model that achieves national balanced development and integration. He elaborated on the background of beating Seoul by a significant margin of 49 to 11 in the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee’s vote in February.

The strategy for regional city solidarity plans to minimize the construction of new venues to four out of 33 sports categories and actively utilize existing facilities in Daegu, Gwangju, and the Chungcheong region, thus aiming for an “economical and eco-friendly Olympics.”

Governor Kim also noted that 2036 marks the 100th anniversary of Sohn Kee-chung’s gold medal at the Berlin Olympics, presenting it as a prime opportunity to showcase the nation’s remarkable growth from historic adversities to the world. He highlighted Korea’s global reputation through K-culture and its track record with the successful 1988 Seoul Olympics and PyeongChang Winter Olympics as robust assets in the bid competition.

Currently, 14 countries are competing to host the 2036 Olympics, with South Korea anticipated to contest against India and Qatar from the Asian region following the continental rotation principle.

Previously, Chairman Kim Joong-seok stated, “Jeonju’s bid for the 2036 Olympics presents a new Olympic model where regional cities unite for national balanced development and integration,” pledging the full support of the association’s members for the bid.
