Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education has decided to establish a system that allows local residents to share elementary, middle, and high school spaces in preparation for the decrease in school-age population.
Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced today (26th) that it plans to operate the ‘Two-Block School’ model to flexibly respond to changes in the educational environment through the sharing of school facilities and community facilities.
The model involves opening school spaces such as playgrounds and parking lots to local residents, while allowing students to use external facilities in the community such as public parking lots and childcare centers. It is divided into three sections: school block, community block, and outside school block based on the managing entity and location.
The school block consists of spaces within the school managed and operated by the school principal, including classrooms and administrative offices, used exclusively for educational purposes.
The community block allows the local government to share school spaces, including gymnasiums, parking lots, swimming pools, libraries, information centers, sports facilities, educational centers, and childcare centers.
The outside school block includes local facilities previously managed by the local government, such as public parking lots and cultural and sports multipurpose spaces, now shared and managed in accordance with agreements by the school.
Existing schools will expand their exclusive school spaces into community blocks, while newly established schools will actively utilize community blocks where external parties use school spaces.
