Relief for Parking Issues in Samcheong-dong? Jongno-gu Opens Public Parking Lot with 178 Spaces [Seoul25]

Seoul’s Jongno District has announced the operation of the Samcheong No. 1 Public Parking Lot, located at 25-1 Samcheong-dong and one other plot, starting from May 9. This initiative aims to alleviate parking difficulties in the Samcheong-dong area. The district stated that by utilizing idle land from the Military Seoul District Hospital, they have secured public parking space for residents and tourists, which is significant for improving parking conditions around Samcheong-dong and Bukchon, as well as resolving issues like landscape deterioration in alleys and fire truck access.

Samcheong-dong and Bukchon Hanok Village, major tourist attractions in Seoul, have a mix of cultural facilities, commercial establishments, and residential areas, leading to high parking demand due to a significant floating population. There was an urgent need to establish parking facilities to protect residents’ living rights and to ensure safety and emergency response capabilities. In response, the district signed a business agreement with the Military Seoul District Hospital to convert part of the hospital’s premises into a parking area.

The newly constructed Samcheong No. 1 Public Parking Lot at the entrance of Samcheong Park has a total area of 5,706 square meters with two underground floors. It includes 178 parking spaces for general and disabled vehicles and is equipped with a parking management system and CCTV for safety. The parking lot will undergo a trial operation for residents and visitors from May 9 to May 15, after which it will be managed as a resident-priority parking system starting from May 16.

Jung Moon-heon, the head of Jongno District, remarked that this parking lot development is an exemplary case of cooperation between local governments and military institutions to resolve parking issues. He expressed commitment to devising effective measures to address urban parking challenges and to expanding social infrastructure, including public parking lots, to enhance residents’ convenience.
