Rebar collapses at the Yeouido Sillim Line construction site… 1 person dead

**6 Workers Rescued, 1 Injured; Fatal Accident in April at Gwangmyeong Site**

On the 18th, an accident occurred at the construction site of the Shinansan subway line’s underground tunnel near Yeouido Station in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, where a rebar fell, resulting in the death of one worker and the injury of another. This incident occurred 8 months after a collapse accident at a Shinansan line construction site in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, in April, where one worker also died.

According to the police and fire department, a report was received at 1:22 PM that day stating, “Rebar has collapsed, and someone is trapped,” at the Shinansan line construction site near Yeouido Station. The accident occurred when a 40m long rebar structure, installed on the ceiling, collapsed during concrete pouring at about 70 meters underground.

A 50-year-old male, Mr. A, was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but unfortunately passed away. Mr. A, an employee of a subcontractor, was struck on the head by falling rebar while working onsite. Another worker sustained shoulder abrasions and other injuries. Five other workers nearby managed to escape safely.

In a previous incident in April, a construction site for the Shinansan underground tunnel in Gwangmyeong City collapsed, resulting in the death of a 50-year-old man who was working at the time. The Shinansan line, connecting Yeouido in Seoul with Ansan and Siheung in Gyeonggi Province, began construction in September 2019. Both the April Gwangmyeong collapse and the current Yeouido accident were constructed by POSCO E&C. The police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Additionally, on the afternoon of the same day, a 27-ton crane overturned at a construction site on the southern end of Jamsil Bridge in Songpa-gu, Seoul, resulting in the death of a 60-year-old man at the site.
