Police officer arrested again for stealing confiscated items… Police conduct belated ‘full investigation’

[Anchor]

A current police officer has been arrested for embezzling confiscated items worth about 300 million KRW. Additionally, another officer has been urgently arrested for allegedly stealing cash confiscated during a voice phishing investigation.

Amid criticisms pointing out loopholes in the management of confiscated items, the police have belatedly decided to conduct a full survey of the evidence management status and devise countermeasures.

This is a report by Hyun-jung Lee.

The police have urgently arrested Sergeant Kim from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul.

It was discovered that Sergeant Kim concealed and stole part of the cash that was confiscated during a voice phishing investigation and stored in a warehouse.

The police immediately suspended Sergeant Kim from his position and are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

According to YTN’s investigation, it was reported that Sergeant Kim, after learning of a 300 million KRW confiscation theft that was uncovered at the Gangnam Police Station, attempted to return the stolen money but was caught.

Earlier, Sergeant Jeong from the Gangnam Police Station was also arrested for embezzling confiscated items worth 300 million KRW.

[Sergeant Jeong / Crime Prevention Response Division, Gangnam Police Station: (Did you think your crime would not be detected?) . (Did you plan the crime alone?) …. (Was it to cover up losses from investment failures?) ….]

Sergeant Jeong committed the crime during his tenure in the investigation department, where he was in charge of managing confiscated items.

Despite each item being individually marked with identification devices such as barcodes, the negligence within the police force has led to significant loopholes in the management of confiscated items.

[Lee Sa-il / Lawyer, Former Police Officer: Isn’t there a designated person managing confiscated items? I think strengthening the management through cross-verification of records by individuals is necessary.]

With confiscated items stored in police stations being repeatedly stolen by none other than police officers, the National Police Agency announced plans to belatedly conduct a full investigation of all evidence.
