Police falsely accused a pregnant woman of theft, even lying about having seen CCTV footage; what happened?

[Financial News] An incident occurred where the police accused a pregnant woman of theft without clear evidence, and the police have since apologized, admitting their investigation approach was inappropriate.

According to JTBC’s “Incident Commander” on the 4th, the informant, Ms. A, who is five months pregnant, said, “On the 1st around 3 PM, someone suddenly knocked on my apartment door.” She added, “I was startled and saw a man who claimed to be a detective yelling at me to come out.”

Ms. A explained, “My husband wasn’t home at the time, and the man outside was not in uniform, so I couldn’t verify if he was really police, which was very frightening. I ended up calling 112, and upon checking, it turned out the man was indeed a detective.”

When Ms. A opened the door, the detective raised his voice without hesitation, accusing her, “I came after checking the CCTV. It was confirmed that you took the items.”

At that time, a resident living on the same floor as Ms. A had reported a package theft, and the detective had treated Ms. A as the suspect.

Ms. A continued to assert her innocence, and the detective, after some dispute, eventually left the scene.

A few days later, still feeling wronged, Ms. A contacted the police, requesting to see the CCTV footage purportedly showing her stealing.

The police responded, “It’s difficult due to the ongoing investigation and privacy issues.”

However, when the producers of “Incident Commander” checked with the apartment, they found that there was no CCTV footage of the crime scene, meaning no footage existed of Ms. A committing the crime.

Upon further inquiry from the production team, the police stated, “We were informed that there was definite circumstantial evidence.” When asked again to see the CCTV that the detective allegedly secured, the police changed their stance, admitting, “In fact, we were informed there is no CCTV.”

This was an acknowledgment from the police that the statement “I came after seeing the CCTV” was a lie.

The police explained, “It seems the detective said that in an attempt to resolve the case quickly,” adding, “Please understand it as a method of interrogation.”

The police further stated, “We judged based on circumstantial evidence that since there are only two units on the floor where the theft occurred, the neighboring house must be the culprit,” and admitted, “The investigation method was inappropriate, and we will caution the detective in charge.”

Ms. A revealed, “I received a call from the police saying they would visit to apologize, but I told them not to come because I was frightened.” She added, “I am greatly disappointed in the police for abusing their power and ignoring procedures, and I have filed complaints with the national anti-corruption and civil rights commission.”
