Employees of the Jirisan National Park’s Gyeongnam Office were engaged in fire extinguishing efforts on the morning of the 26th near Gugoksan in Sicheon-myeon, Sancheong County, and within 200 meters of the boundary of Jirisan. The wildfire in Sancheong County, Gyeongnam, reached the boundary of Jirisan National Park. The distance from the wildfire site to Jirisan’s Cheonwangbong Peak is approximately 8.5 kilometers.
On the 26th, the wildfire spread to within 200 meters inside the boundary of Jirisan National Park. According to an official from the Integrated Command Center for Wildfire Sites, as of 12:30 p.m., the wildfire had reached 200 meters inside the boundary, and the fire line was 300 meters. Although helicopters are being used for extinguishing, the efficiency is reduced due to a large amount of fallen leaves.
The forestry authorities and local governments are making every effort to establish a containment line and prevent the fire from moving towards Cheonwangbong Peak. They are aware that the thicker the layer of fallen leaves, the higher the likelihood of hidden fires, leading to lower extinction efficiency. Instances of the fire reigniting from the wind continue to be repeated.
