A heatwave alert is issued when the highest perceived temperature during the day is expected to exceed 33 degrees for two or more consecutive days. Since May 15 last year, the Korea Meteorological Administration has been operating a heatwave warning system based on the perceived temperature, taking into account temperature and humidity. Accordingly, a heatwave warning may be issued in cases where the maximum temperature is below 33 degrees but the humidity is high. On the other hand, a heatwave warning may not be issued in cases where the maximum temperature is above 33 degrees but the humidity is low.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, on the 20th and 21st, rain may fall in the southern regions and Jeju Island, or clouds may become thicker, causing temperatures to drop by about 2-6 degrees compared to today. However, in the central regions, many places are expected to experience temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.
The Korea Meteorological Administration also emphasized the high possibility of heat-related illnesses and advised the public to be cautious, reduce outdoor activities, prevent food poisoning, and take thorough precautions. Specifically, infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses should reduce their outdoor activity time, and outdoor workplaces should prepare cool water and rest areas. Livestock farms should operate ventilation and misting systems to regulate barn temperatures, and when farming, it is recommended to drink water frequently and wear breathable work clothes.
