Gwanak District Establishes AI Wildfire Response System…”Safe City with Smart Surveillance”

If a Wildfire is Suspected, Linked ‘Drones’ Are Dispatched… Enabling Swift Early Suppression

Gwanak District, with support from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Korea Forest Service, has announced the establishment of an advanced wildfire response system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. From June to September, fire surveillance cameras and a monitoring system were installed at key points on Gwanaksan Mountain. The system uses AI to analyze CCTV footage in real-time to detect smoke or flames and immediately notify administrators.

In particular, an automated drone dispatch system has also been introduced. In suspected wildfire situations, drones are sent to the scene immediately, transmitting footage to assist in the rapid deployment of initial response personnel. A district official explained, “This allows for dense surveillance of areas that are difficult to check with existing CCTV, enabling us to quickly and accurately identify the location of a wildfire.”

Additionally, the district has installed three ‘canopy misting towers’ along the ridge of Gwanaksan Mountain in Namhyeon-dong. These towers can spray water 360 degrees within a 40-meter radius for up to 40 minutes from an average height of 15 meters, effectively preventing the spread of wildfires even in windy ridge areas.

To minimize blind spots, fire surveillance black boxes have been installed on major hiking trails and forest access roads. High-pressure hose equipment storage boxes have been placed in forests with limited water supply to support early suppression efforts. The wildfire prevention and suppression team has been provided with expanded personal firefighting equipment sets, and approximately 3 tons of eco-friendly fire retardant have been spread in wildfire-prone areas to inhibit the spread of flames.

Gwanak District Mayor Park Jun-hee stated, “By integrating AI technology into a smart surveillance system, we aim to prevent wildfires early and protect the lives and property of residents,” adding, “We ask citizens visiting Gwanaksan Mountain during the autumn leaves season to please adhere to safety guidelines.”
