During the period when the Liberty Korea Party was the predecessor, current and former lawmakers and aides from the People Power Party are set to receive a first trial verdict 6 years and 7 months after the incident. The court will deliver the judgment on a first trial involving former lawmakers and aides of the old Liberty Korea Party who were indicted for obstructing a fast-track bill enforced by the Democratic Party. The trial will come 6 years after the incident.
The 11th Criminal Division of the Southern District Court in Seoul, presided over by Judge Jang Chan, will hold the sentencing at 2 p.m. on the 20th for Na Kyung-won, a member of the People’s Strength Party, and Hwang Kyo-ahn, former Prime Minister, who are accused of special obstruction of official duties and violating the National Assembly Act.
Na Kyung-won and 27 others are accused of confining Chae Yi-bae, a member of the Bareunmirae Party, in his office in April 2019, and interfering with the proceedings at the National Assembly. The prosecution against one of the defendants, Jang Jae-won, has been dismissed due to his passing.
This verdict comes 6 years and 7 months after the incident and 5 years and 10 months after the prosecution. At the final hearing held on September 15th, the prosecution sought a 2-year prison sentence for Na Kyung-won, who was the floor leader at the time, and a 1-year and 6-month sentence for Hwang Kyo-ahn, then the party leader.
For Song Eon-seok, the current floor leader of the People Power Party, a 10-month sentence and a 2 million won fine were sought; for lawmakers Kim Jeong-jae and Lee Man-hee, a 10-month sentence and a 300,000 won fine; for lawmaker Yoon Han-hong, a 6-month sentence and a 3 million won fine; and for lawmaker Lee Chul-kyu, a 3 million won fine.
Former lawmaker Kang Hyo-sang, who is not in office, has been sentenced to 6 months in prison and a 5 million won fine. Former lawmakers Min Kyung-wook and Lee Eun-jae were sentenced to 10 months in prison and a 5 million won fine.
Elected officials will lose their positions if sentenced to imprisonment or more in a criminal case. Lawmakers will lose their seats if fined 5 million won or more for violating the National Assembly Act.
