The project, overseen by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Land and Geospatial InformatiX Corporation (LX) Address Information Utilization Support Center, targets the three island areas of Wonsando, Godaedo, and Sapsido located in Ocheon-myeon, Boryeong City. The newly established drone delivery points have been set up in convenient locations for residents, such as welfare centers, health centers, and docks, with a total of 30 locations across the three islands.
The drone and robot-linked delivery service operates by having drones transport goods from the mainland to the drone delivery points on the islands. From there, robots receive the items at the transfer stations of the delivery points and deliver them to homes, guesthouses, and other locations.
This service is expected to significantly enhance convenience for island residents and visiting tourists, who can receive deliveries via app or phone orders. Additionally, it is anticipated to reduce the excessive costs and time previously incurred for shipping small items to vulnerable groups in island areas.
Kim Taek-jung, Director of the Construction and Transportation Bureau of Chungcheongnam-do, stated, “The establishment of drone delivery point addresses will greatly improve welfare on the islands,” and emphasized that “we will continue to collaborate with city and county offices and related organizations to discover and promote new projects using 4th Industrial Revolution technologies like drones and robots to improve the quality of life for residents.”
