When you search for a specific disease on Naver, you can immediately check the number of patients by age group, gender ratio, and medical expenses per person.

The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) announced today (the 24th) that it has launched a new public service in collaboration with Naver to easily and conveniently provide statistical information about diseases through the search platform.

This service initially offers 125 diseases that are frequently searched by the public on Naver and can be analyzed using NHIS’s big data.

For example, if you enter a disease like shingles in the Naver search bar, you can immediately view clinical information related to the disease, as well as the number of patients, gender ratio, and medical expenses calculated based on nationwide medical usage information.

The patient number statistics are calculated based on last year, counting the actual annual number of patients who received treatment for the disease from NHIS subscribers, excluding duplicates.

The medical expense statistics provide information on annual medical costs over the past five years, from 2020 to last year, based on the total medical expenses, which include both out-of-pocket and insurance-covered expenses.

However, the medical expense statistics do not reflect factors such as the severity or comorbidities of individual patients.

NHIS calculated the average and range by excluding the top and bottom 5% to account for external factors that could affect medical expenses.

By applying the out-of-pocket rate by type of service (30% for outpatient at clinics, 20% for hospitalization, and 5-10% for severe diseases/exceptional cases), you can estimate the personal expense.

Jeong Ki-seok, Chairman of NHIS, stated, “This service is a prime example of public-private collaboration combining public data owned by public institutions with private technology to make credible health information easily accessible in everyday life,” and added, “We will continue to expand services that enhance public access to health information.”
