‘An 80-year-old driver who caused the deaths of three people crossing a crosswalk by speeding and violating traffic signals was sentenced to a longer prison term in the appeal court than in the first trial.’

“On the 23rd, Chuncheon District Court’s Criminal Division 1 overturned the original sentence (1 year and 6 months in prison) and sentenced driver A, 83, who was charged with violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling, to 2 years and 6 months in prison.”

“A was charged with running over three people crossing a crosswalk near Namchuncheon Station in Gangwon Province early in the morning of November 22 last year.”

“At the time of the accident, A was driving at 97 km/h on a 60 km/h road and was found to have also violated traffic signals. The three individuals who died in the accident were returning home after finishing early morning prayers at a nearby church.”

“The court stated, ‘Even considering that this is A’s first offense, that A has admitted to the crime, and A’s poor health due to old age, the level of breach of duty of care is very serious, and the damages are significant.'”
