Beginning in March, Jeju City will implement a policy allowing the entry of pets into certain establishments. This change applies to rest restaurants, general restaurants, and bakeries, permitting dining with dogs and cats. Businesses opting to allow pets must display a “Pet-Friendly” sign and have specific facilities such as partitions for separate spaces.
The policy, introduced in alignment with the revised ‘Food Sanitation Act Enforcement Rules,’ gives business owners the discretion to permit pet entry. While pet entry is limited to dogs and cats accompanying their owners, assistance dogs are allowed in all food service establishments as per the ‘Enforcement Rules of the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities Act.’
Businesses that welcome pets must adhere to hygiene and safety standards, including checking vaccination status and restricting unvaccinated pets, controlling access to food preparation areas, installing equipment to limit pet movement, and having separate storage for pet-related items and dedicated trash cans.
Existing business operators can adopt this policy without the need for additional reporting, while new businesses must specify their pet entry policy in the updated business registration form. The city plans to provide field guidance, inspections, and continuous promotion to ensure the smooth adoption of this policy.
