‘Coronavirus confirmed’ Lee Jae-myung, schedule change for ‘Daejang-dong corruption case’ trial on the 27th

‘While Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, entered self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19, the trial date for the ‘Daejang-dong, Baekhyun-dong, and Wirye New Town Development Corruption Case’ has been changed, following the ‘Violation of Public Official Election Act’ and ‘Perjury Teacher Case’.

According to the legal community on the 26th, the initial date set for the first trial related to Lee’s involvement in the Daejang-dong case was changed. The next trial date for this case is now set for the 30th.

Lee is accused of giving favoritism to private businessmen in the development of Daejang-dong during his time as mayor of Seongnam and causing losses of 489.5 billion won to Seongnam Urban Development Corporation, as well as transferring information about the Wirye New Town development to private businessmen last March. The trial at the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 33, presided over by Judge Kim Dong-hyun, is still in progress regarding these corruption allegations. The timing of the first trial verdict is yet to be determined.

Previously, the Democratic Party announced on the 22nd that Lee tested positive for COVID-19 and entered self-isolation. Consequently, various trial dates related to him have been rescheduled. The first trial for the ‘Violation of Public Official Election Act’ that was originally set for the 23rd has been postponed to September 6, and the trial for the ‘Perjury Teacher Case’ scheduled for the 26th has been delayed to September 9. The legal community expects the verdicts for these two cases to be announced around late October to early November.’
