[Breaking News] Police: “Efforts to Quickly Apprehend Coupang Leak Suspect and Minimize Damage”

Yoo Jae-sung, the acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, stated on the 30th, regarding the Coupang customer information leak incident, “We will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and quickly apprehend the suspect.”

Acting Commissioner Yoo made this statement during an emergency meeting of related ministries held at the Government Complex Seoul, noting that this incident is “an issue that has affected many citizens.”

He emphasized, “We will work in cooperation with relevant ministries to minimize the damage to the public.”

According to News1, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency began a preliminary investigation into Coupang’s personal information leak incident on the 21st, and on the 25th, they received Coupang’s complaint and transitioned to a formal investigation.

Currently, the police are focusing on understanding the circumstances surrounding the personal information leak.

Coupang revealed on the previous day that “on the 18th, we became aware that the personal information of approximately 4,500 accounts was exposed without authorization, and we immediately reported it to the National Police Agency, Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and the Personal Information Protection Commission.” In a subsequent investigation, it was confirmed that about 33.7 million customer accounts were exposed without authorization.

The leaked information includes customer names, email addresses, delivery address books, and some order information. However, Coupang stated that payment information, credit card numbers, and login information were not included.
