A man in his 20s has been urgently arrested by the police for allegedly aiding or abetting the suicide of a woman in her 20s, whom he invited to his home through a chat application and who was suffering from depression.
The Gyeonggi Uiwang Police Station announced on the 28th that they had arrested and were investigating a person referred to as Mr. A on charges of murder by inducement.
Mr. A is accused of calling Ms. B, whom he recently met through the chat app, to his home, living together for a few days, and being involved in her act of taking her own life.
Ms. B was previously diagnosed with depression and had been receiving treatment. It is understood that she became acquainted with Mr. A after seeing a post he made on the chat app. The police suspect that Ms. B died in the morning of the previous day.
In the course of tracking a missing person report for a teenage girl identified as Ms. C, the police confirmed Mr. A’s involvement. Using telecom investigations, they traced Ms. C’s location, finding that she had also visited Mr. A’s home after seeing his post on the afternoon of the 27th.
During police questioning, Mr. A reportedly stated, “I was drinking and fell asleep, and when I woke up around 11 a.m., Ms. B was dead. I don’t remember the details.”
Neither Mr. A nor Ms. C reported Ms. B’s death to the police or authorities. Mr. A does not have any particular occupation, and it is not yet determined whether he was directly involved in Ms. B’s death or if he simply allowed it to happen.
The police plan to request an autopsy for Ms. B’s body from the National Institute of Scientific Investigation. They are also considering changing the charges to murder if evidence of Mr. A’s direct involvement is found.
A police representative explained, “It appears that Mr. A gave his home address to Ms. B and Ms. C through the chat and invited them over. It is yet to be determined whether Mr. A also suffers from a mental illness or if he attempted suicide together with them.”
