A zebra named “Ed,” which had been roaming residential areas and highways for over a week and making headlines across U.S. online platforms, has finally been captured. According to local media such as the New York Post on the 8th (local time), a pet zebra escaped in Tennessee on May 31st. The zebra, nicknamed “Ed,” broke free just a day after meeting its new owner and roamed widely across Tennessee.
Ed surprised residents by wandering through neighborhoods and even appeared on highways, causing traffic disruptions in the vicinity. Although efforts were made to block roads and capture him, Ed managed to evade pursuers and escape into the woods.
After over a week of evading capture, Ed was finally caught eight days after his escape in a pasture near an enclosure in the Christiana area, about 40 miles from Nashville. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office deployed a helicopter to safely transport Ed after his capture.
As Ed’s escape extended over time, the situation turned into a meme online. There were parody photos suggesting Ed fled to visit a water park or a famous restaurant. In Tennessee, no special permits or documents are required to keep zebras as pets. It is reported that llamas, giraffes, camels, and other animals classified as “Class 3 animals” can also be kept freely.
