[Seoul=Newsis] Reporter Lee Jae-jun: President Donald Trump has stated his intention to use tariff policies to reduce the trade deficit with China, according to reports by the Yonhapbo, Dongwang, and Hong Kong Economic Times on the 23rd.

According to the media, President Trump announced that on April 2nd, Korean time, ahead of triggering reciprocal tariffs, Jamison Greer, a representative of the USTR, would visit China.

President Trump mentioned that Representative Greer is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart (Minister of Commerce) but did not elaborate on whether they would achieve something through consultations or increase tariffs on Chinese imports.

Nevertheless, President Trump emphasized his desire to reduce the enormous trade deficit with China, the United States’ biggest trade competitor.

Earlier in January, President Trump imposed an additional 20% tariff on all products imported from China.

Reciprocal tariffs are additional tariffs imposed on all products imported by the United States, and there is a high possibility that new measures against China will be included.

Meanwhile, President Trump reiterated his intention to flexibly respond to tariff policies and use tariffs as a card to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China.

Additionally, President Trump mentioned his plan to hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss tariff policies.

However, President Trump did not specify the timing of the U.S.-China summit.

China is fiercely opposing President Trump’s high tariff impositions and other trade measures, calling them unproductive and unfair.

In response, China has imposed a 10% retaliatory tariff on U.S. crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and agricultural equipment.
