Tom Cruise Receives First Oscar Trophy in His Lifetime: Wins Academy Honorary Award

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise (62) has received his first Oscar (Academy Award) trophy. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on the 17th (local time) that Tom Cruise, choreographer Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas have been selected as this year’s recipients of the Academy Honorary Awards. The awards ceremony will be held at the 16th Governors Awards in November.

The Academy stated that Cruise was recognized for his “remarkable dedication to the film-making community, dramatic experiences for audiences, and the stunt community, inspiring us all.” The Academy Honorary Award is given to individuals who have achieved outstanding accomplishments over a lifetime or have made special contributions to the arts and sciences of film.

Cruise has previously been nominated for an Academy acting award three times and once as a producer for Best Picture, but he has not won any. He was nominated for Best Actor for the films “Born on the Fourth of July” (1990) and “Jerry Maguire” (1997), and for Best Supporting Actor for “Magnolia” (2000). In 2023, he was nominated for Best Picture with “Top Gun: Maverick.”

AP reported that Cruise will finally receive a trophy 35 years after his first Oscar nomination in 1990. Hollywood media outlet Variety noted that Cruise played a key role in reigniting box office enthusiasm by releasing “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022) during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also highlighted that he is known for performing his own stunt action scenes in series like “Mission: Impossible.”
