The Permanent Representative of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to the United Nations has dismissed South Korean government statements and media reports claiming that North Korea is sending troops to assist Russia in the Ukraine war as “baseless rumors.” On the 21st local time, a DPRK representative at the UN responded during a meeting of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) at the UN General Assembly in New York, saying, “There is no need for our delegation to address these blatant, baseless rumors intended to tarnish the image of our sovereign nation through allegedly military cooperation with Russia.”
This marks North Korea’s first reaction to reports regarding the deployment of North Korean forces in Russia. The representative added that the supposed weapons transfer between sovereign states claimed by these countries is unrelated to topics of disarmament and international security.
The comments from the DPRK representative were in response to statements by a Ukrainian government representative, who suggested that North Korea is involved in arms transactions with Russia and is expected to dispatch a large number of troops there soon. Previously, North Korea had remained silent on reports from the South Korean government and media claims about the deployment of North Korean troops to support Russia in the Ukraine war.
Earlier at the meeting, the Ukrainian delegation highlighted that according to available data, North Korea is expected to send about 11,000 regular troops to support Russian forces in the fight against Ukraine’s military shortly.
