Hwang Joon-kook, South Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, strongly criticized North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), describing it as a textbook example of what happens when a UN member state fails to implement Security Council resolutions.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting held at the UN headquarters in New York on the 4th local time, Ambassador Hwang emphasized, “There is a fundamental question of how a sanctioned, impoverished, and ostracized country can continue to advance its ballistic missile technology.”
Ambassador Hwang mentioned that in January, South Korea proposed an update to the list of prohibited items for North Korea, but two permanent member countries of the Security Council notified their opposition. He urged member states to cooperate in responding to North Korea’s violations and evasions of UN sanctions.
